Her Family and Early Writing

Elizabeth had an aunt named Alison Cockburn who was also a poet. This likely encouraged Elizabeth to write. A famous Scottish poet, Allan Ramsay, also supported her writing.

In 1768, Elizabeth married Walter Scot. They lived together at Wauchope House near Jedburgh, Scotland.

Her Most Famous Poem

Elizabeth Scot is best known for a special poem she wrote in 1787. It was called ‘The Guidwife of Wauchope-house to Robert Burns’. This poem was like a letter written in verse to the famous Scottish poet Robert Burns.

Robert Burns even visited Elizabeth when he was traveling through Scotland. Other writers, like Allan Ramsay (who was also a key figure in the Enlightenment) and Thomas Blacklock, also supported her work.
