Her Family Background

Elizabeth was born on April 7, 1736. Her father was Richard Powys, who was a Member of Parliament (MP). This meant he was part of the government, helping to make laws for the country. Her mother was Lady Mary Brudenell. Elizabeth also had a sister named Mary, who married James Stopford, 2nd Earl of Courtown. After their father passed away in 1743, their mother remarried Thomas Bowlby, who was also an MP.

Marriage and Children

Elizabeth Townshend married Thomas Townshend on May 19, 1760. Together, they had twelve children. Sadly, some of their children passed away when they were very young. Their children included:

Role at Court

From 1791 to 1818, Elizabeth Townshend held an important position at the royal court. She was a Lady of the Bedchamber to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who was the queen of King George III of the United Kingdom. A Lady of the Bedchamber was a high-ranking lady-in-waiting who helped the queen with her daily life and duties.

Later Life and Legacy

Elizabeth's husband, Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney, passed away in June 1800 at the age of 67. Their son, John Thomas, then inherited his father's titles and became the 2nd Viscount Sydney. Elizabeth Townshend, Viscountess Sydney, lived a long life and passed away in May 1826 when she was 90 years old.
