Elizabeth Lee Wurtzel (July 31, 1967 – January 7, 2020) was an American writer, journalist, and lawyer. She became well-known for her book Prozac Nation, which she published when she was 27 years old. Her writing often explored her personal experiences and feelings. Elizabeth Wurtzel's work helped make personal memoirs very popular in the 1990s. Many people saw her as an important voice for her generation. Later in her life, she worked as a lawyer before she passed away from breast cancer.

Early Life
Elizabeth Wurtzel grew up in New York City in a Jewish family. She lived on the Upper West Side and went to the Ramaz School. Her parents divorced when she was young. Her mother, Lynne Winters, mostly raised her. Her mother worked in publishing and as a media consultant.
Elizabeth was a very smart student. She went on to attend Harvard College. She faced personal challenges during her time there.
Early Career
While studying at Harvard in the late 1980s, Elizabeth Wurtzel wrote for The Harvard Crimson. This was her college newspaper. In 1986, she won an award from Rolling Stone magazine for her journalism. She also had an internship at The Dallas Morning News. She had some challenges during her internship there.
After graduating from Harvard in 1989, Elizabeth moved to Greenwich Village in New York City. She became a pop music critic. She wrote for famous magazines like The New Yorker and New York Magazine.
Prozac Nation
Elizabeth Wurtzel was most famous for her best-selling book, Prozac Nation. It was published in 1994 when she was 27. The book tells her story about facing personal challenges while she was in college. It also talks about her treatment with a medicine called Prozac.
Prozac Nation became a very popular book. It was a New York Times bestseller. A movie based on the book was made. The film starred Christina Ricci and came out in 2001.
Law School
In 2004, Elizabeth Wurtzel decided to apply to Yale Law School. She later wrote that she mainly wanted to attend law school, not necessarily to become a lawyer. She was accepted at Yale. She worked as a summer associate at a law firm.
She earned her law degree in 2008. She passed the New York state bar exam in 2010. After that, she worked full-time at a law firm called Boies, Schiller & Flexner in New York City. She worked there from 2008 to 2012. She continued to work for the firm on special projects. In 2010, she wrote an article suggesting that bar exams should be removed.
Writing Career
Elizabeth Wurtzel wrote regularly for The Wall Street Journal.
In 2015, she published a short book called Creatocracy. This book was based on her thesis from Yale Law School. It was about intellectual property law.
Personal Life
Elizabeth Wurtzel met James Freed Jr., a photo editor, in 2013. They got engaged in 2014 and married in May 2015. They later separated but remained close friends. They were still legally married when she passed away.
Illness and Death
In February 2015, Elizabeth Wurtzel shared that she had breast cancer.
She passed away in Manhattan on January 7, 2020. She was 52 years old. Her death was due to complications from her breast cancer.
Her personal belongings were sold at an auction two years after her death.
