Elizabeth York Brunton (born in 1880, died around 1960) was a talented artist from Scotland. She was famous for her paintings using both oil and watercolour. She also created beautiful art using a special technique called colour woodcuts. Even though she lived in Edinburgh for most of her life, her artwork was mostly shown in other countries.

About Elizabeth York Brunton

Elizabeth Brunton was born in a town called Musselburgh. She went to art school at the Edinburgh College of Art. Later, she traveled to Paris, France, to continue her art studies. There, she learned from a teacher named Edouard Nevellier.

Elizabeth loved to paint busy market scenes in Europe. She used both oil paints and watercolours for these artworks. In Paris, she showed a sculpture at a famous art show called the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1925. She also displayed her colourful wood engravings at another big art show, the Salon d'Automne, in 1929 and 1930.

Her Art and Exhibitions

Elizabeth Brunton became a member of the Colour Woodcut Society. This group focused on art made with coloured woodcuts. She also showed her prints at the Society of Graver Printers in Colour from 1924 to 1932. She later became a member of this society too.

Her prints were shown in many art exhibitions around the world. These included shows in New York and Boston in the United States. Her art was also displayed in Leipzig, Germany, and in countries like France, Holland, and Japan. You can often see a Japanese style in her prints of birds and animals.

Even though she showed most of her art overseas, Elizabeth also displayed her work in Scotland. She had pieces at the Royal Scottish Academy and with the Scottish Society of Women Artists. She also showed about nineteen artworks at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts. Today, the British Museum in London has eleven examples of her prints.
