Elizabethtown is a small community in Essex County, New York, United States. It is known as a hamlet and a census-designated place (CDP). A hamlet is a small settlement, and a CDP is a place that looks like a town but isn't officially incorporated.
In 2010, about 754 people lived in the Elizabethtown CDP. The entire town of Elizabethtown had a population of 1,163 people. Elizabethtown is also the county seat of Essex County. This means it's where the main government offices for the county are located. The community was named after Elizabeth Gilliland, who was the wife of an early settler named William Gilliland.

History of Elizabethtown
Elizabethtown grew from earlier settlements in the area. It became the county seat in 1807. Because it was the center for government, many people who worked in law lived here.
Elizabethtown officially became a village in 1876. This meant it had its own local government. However, the village government decided to dissolve itself in 1981. So, it is no longer an official village, but it is still a lively community.
The Essex County Courthouse
The Essex County Courthouse is an important building in Elizabethtown. In 1859, a famous historical figure named John Brown was honored there. His body was laid in state, with local citizens standing guard.
Today, a life-size portrait of John Brown hangs in the courthouse. He was an important person in American history, known for his actions against slavery. The courthouse is a place where people can learn about the past.
