Elkhead, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Elkhead is a small, quiet place in eastern Christian County, Missouri, in the United States. It's not a big city or town with its own government, but rather an "unincorporated community." This means it's a group of homes and buildings that are part of the larger county, rather than having its own mayor or city council.

You can find Elkhead along Route 14, which is a road that runs through the area. It's about sixteen miles (or about 26 kilometers) east of a town called Ozark. Elkhead is also considered part of the larger Springfield, Missouri Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Springfield and its surrounding communities.

History of Elkhead

Elkhead used to have its very own post office, which is where people would send and receive mail. This post office was set up way back in 1871. It served the community for many years, helping people connect through letters and packages. However, the post office eventually closed down in 1981. Today, people in Elkhead get their mail from the post office in a nearby town called Sparta.

The name "Elkhead" comes from a nearby stream called Elkhorn Creek. It's common for communities to be named after local natural features like rivers or creeks.
