The Elkhorn Band Shell is a special outdoor stage located in Sunset Park in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. It was built a long time ago, in 1926, to give musicians a great place to perform. This historic building is a wonderful spot for concerts and community events.
The Elkhorn Band Shell: A Stage for Music
A band shell is like a big, curved outdoor stage. Its special shape helps to send the sound of music out to the audience. The Elkhorn Band Shell was built especially for the Holton-Elkhorn band. This band was very important in the town.
Building a Musical Home
The idea for the band shell came about after the Frank Holton Company moved to Elkhorn in 1918. This company made musical instruments. The town wanted a proper stage for their band. The band shell cost about $5,000 to build, which was a lot of money back then!
The design for the Elkhorn Band Shell was inspired by another band shell in Mount Morris, Illinois. A person named G. Pheby from Phoenix, Arizona, helped with the design. When the band shell first opened, about 4,000 people came to the very first concert! Imagine that many people gathered to listen to music.
Moving Day: A Community Effort
The Elkhorn Band Shell was not always in Sunset Park. It was first built in the courthouse square. But in 1962, the courthouse needed more space. This meant the band shell had to move.
The community of Elkhorn really loved their band shell. They didn't want it to be taken apart. So, the people of Elkhorn worked together and raised $5,000. This money helped to move the entire band shell to its new home in Sunset Park. It was a big project, but they saved this important piece of their town's history.
