A Look at Mount Morris's Past

Mount Morris has a rich history. It is home to the Illinois Freedom Bell, which stands proudly in the town square.

The area where the town square is now used to be the campus of Mount Morris College. This was one of the first places in Illinois for higher education. It started as a Methodist school and later became connected with the Church of the Brethren. The college eventually closed because of tough economic times.

The village has faced challenges with its schools. In 1993, the old Junior High School caught fire during demolition. This led to the school district joining with the Oregon School District. Later, in 2004, the Rahn Elementary School was also lost to a fire. After this, the school district was reorganized. The former Oregon elementary and middle schools were combined. Today, the old Mount Morris High School is used as the middle school for the district.

Mount Morris is also special because it has many Lustron homes. These are unique, prefabricated steel houses built after World War II. You can find 18 of these houses in town, including some on First Street, Hannah Avenue, and Sunset Lane. They were built to help with a housing shortage for a local printing company.
