Ella J. Bradley-Hughley (born 1889, died 1918) was an American choir director and a talented solo singer. She was known as a soprano, which is a high female singing voice, sometimes even called a prima donna (a leading female singer in opera). Ella was very active and well-known in Los Angeles, California, from 1911 until 1918. People there even gave her a special nickname: the "Queen of Song"!

Early Life and Education

Ella J. Bradley was born on March 1, 1889, in Dallas, Texas. She grew up in a Black Christian family. For her education, she attended Bishop College in Marshall, Texas. She worked hard and graduated from Bishop College in 1907.

In 1911, Ella married David H. Hughley in Dallas. Soon after their wedding, they decided to move to Los Angeles, California. This move opened up new opportunities for Ella's music career.

A Star in Los Angeles

Once in Los Angeles, Ella quickly became a well-known figure in the music world. Her talent was recognized, and she became very popular.

Her Musical Training

To improve her singing skills even more, Ella studied with several important music teachers in Los Angeles. She learned from J. Jurakian, who was an Armenian gospel singer. She also studied with George H. Carr and with Florencio Constantino, a famous Spanish opera singer. These lessons helped her become an even better performer.

Teaching and Performing

Ella's first performance in Los Angeles was organized by Reverend J. T. Hill at the Wesley Chapel. She also shared her musical knowledge by teaching others. She became the head of the voice-culture department at the Wilkins Conservatory of Music. This school was also known as the Wilkins Piano Academy and was started by William Wilkins.

Sadly, Ella J. Bradley-Hughley passed away in February 1918. Even though her life was short, she left a lasting impression as a talented singer and music teacher.
