Ellen Marie Braae (born in 1965) is a talented Danish landscape architect. Since 2014, she has been a professor at Copenhagen University. She was the very first professor of landscape architecture there!
About Ellen Braae
Ellen Braae grew up on a farm near Rønde in central Jutland, Denmark. After finishing high school at Aarhus Cathedral School, she continued her education. She followed a family tradition by attending Viborg Gymnastikskole.
Her Education and Career
Ellen then went on to study landscape architecture at the Aarhus School of Architecture. She graduated in 1991. Later, in 2003, she earned her PhD.
From 2003 to 2006, Ellen taught urban design at Aarhus University. She focused on landscape architecture until 2009.
In 2009, she moved to Copenhagen University. By April 2014, she became the first professor of theory and methods in landscape architecture. This new role helps make landscape architecture a stronger field of study.
Ellen is also part of the Danish Council for Independent Research. She works with the Culture and Communication section. Her main research looks at how cities grow and how open spaces are used.
Working in the Private Sector
Ellen Braae has also worked outside of universities. She helped start several companies. In 1995, she co-founded the Berg & Braae studio. Later, in 2005, she started Metopos, By- og landskapsdesign. In 2009, she helped create Ikaros Press.
Her Family Life
Ellen Braae was married to Kristian Berg Nielsen. He was a lecturer at the Aarhus School of Architecture. Sadly, he passed away in 2013.
Ellen and Kristian worked together in their architecture firms. They also founded Ikaros Press. This company published research, including a big project about Inger and Johannes Exner. Ellen Braae lives in Risskov with her two teenage sons.
