The Ellen Glasgow House, also known as the Branch-Glasgow House, is a historic home in Richmond, Virginia. It was built in 1841. This house is very important because it was the home of a famous writer named Ellen Glasgow. She lived here from 1887 until she passed away in 1945. In 1971, the house was recognized as a National Historic Landmark.

The Ellen Glasgow House is in Richmond's Monroe Ward area. It is at the corner of Foushee Street and West Main Street. The house has two stories and is made of brick covered in stucco. It has a sloped roof.

House Design and Features

A narrow section extends from the back of the house. A porch also runs along the rest of the back. The main door is in the middle of the front of the house. It has a porch with columns in the Greek Revival style.

Inside, the main rooms are on the first floor. The kitchen and servant rooms were in the back section. Upstairs, there were two bedrooms. One was Ellen Glasgow's bedroom. The other was her office, where she wrote many of her books.

Who was Ellen Glasgow?

The house was built in 1841 by David Branch. Ellen Glasgow's parents bought the house when she was a teenager. She lived here for the rest of her life. During this time, she wrote many novels. All of her stories were set in her home state of Virginia.

A Home for Writing

Her books help us understand what life was like in Virginia. They cover the period from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s. Ellen Glasgow won the Pulitzer Prize in 1942. She received it for her 1941 book, In This Our Life.

What Happened to the House Later?

After Ellen Glasgow passed away in 1945, a group bought the house. This group was called the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. Today, this group is known as Preservation Virginia. The organization has since sold the property.

Community Use

In 1979, some rooms in the Ellen Glasgow House were used as offices. These offices belonged to the Richmond Public Schools. There was also a place called The Carriage House Gallery. It was part of the Ellen Glasgow House property. This gallery showed art from local Richmond artists. One artist featured there was pinhole photographer Willie Anne Wright.
