Ellen Hoog's Hockey Journey

Ellen started playing field hockey when she was seven years old. By age 16, in 2002, she played her first senior game. This was for the Stichtse Cricket en Hockey Club in Bilthoven. She joined the Netherlands women's national field hockey team in 2004 when she was 17. She played in 232 matches for her country and scored 60 goals.

Olympic Games Success

Ellen won two Olympic gold medals with her team. The first was in 2008 at the Beijing Olympics. The second was in 2012 at the London Olympics. She also earned a silver medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.

World Cup and European Wins

In August 2005, Ellen became a European champion in Dublin. Later that year, she won the Champions Trophy in Canberra. She was part of the Dutch teams that won the Women's Hockey World Cup in 2006 and 2014. She was even named the best player of the 2014 World Cup.

Penalty Shootout Hero

Ellen Hoog made history in 2012. She was the first player to win a major championship game with a penalty shootout. This happened in the 2012 Summer Olympics semi-final against New Zealand. She did it again in 2016, taking the winning shot against Germany in the Olympic semi-final.

Retirement from Hockey

Ellen stopped playing for her national team in 2016. She then retired from playing club hockey in May 2017. Her last club was Amsterdamsche Hockey & Bandy Club.

Ellen Hoog was known for her special way of shooting. She was very good at the "reverse stick" shot. She was also strong and accurate with her forehand shot. This skill helped her score many goals, especially from penalty corners. Her quick speed and ability to change direction made her one of the most dangerous midfielders in the world.

Ellen Hoog's Life Off the Field

In August 2015, Ellen released a book called In perfecte conditie. This means "In perfect condition." After ending her professional hockey career, Ellen married her long-term boyfriend in June 2017. She became a mother in February 2019 when her daughter was born.
