Ellen Joyce Loo Hoi Tung (born March 27, 1986 – died August 5, 2018) was a talented musician from Canada and Hong Kong. She was a singer, songwriter, and record producer. Ellen was also a co-founder of the folk-pop rock band at17, where she played guitar and sang backing vocals.

Early Life and Music Beginnings
Ellen Loo was born in Toronto, Canada, on March 27, 1986. When she was four years old, her family moved to Hong Kong. She started learning to play the classical guitar from her father at the age of nine.
At 14, Ellen and her older brother, P. J. Loo, entered a music competition. It was called "Original Music 2000" and was held by Tom Lee Music in Hong Kong. They won third prize in the competition. This was an early step in her musical journey.
Personal Life and Health
In 2013, Ellen Loo faced some health challenges. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In April 2015, she bravely spoke about her condition in public. She wanted to help others who might be going through similar struggles.
Ellen married Taiwanese cinematographer Fisher Yu in 2016. They officially registered their marriage in Canada.
Later Years and Passing
Ellen Loo passed away on August 5, 2018, at the age of 32. She was in Happy Valley, Hong Kong. Her passing was a sad loss to the music world.
Published Works
Ellen Loo also shared her creativity through books. She published a collection of photographs and a book of guitar scores.
Photography and Writings
- Lost. Escape. Rockmuiology – This book was a collection of photographs Ellen took over three years. She used her Revue 35CC camera for these pictures. The book also included her own writings in English. It had 240 pages and was published in July 2006 by Youth Culture in Hong Kong.
Guitar Scores
- I learned the chords at 17 – This book contained 22 original guitar scores from at17's songs. Ellen herself wrote down the music for both standard notation and guitar tablature. It was published in 2005 by People Mountain People Sea / Kubrick in Hong Kong.
