Ellen Emeline Montalba (born February 17, 1842 – died February 22, 1930) was a talented British artist. She was born in Bath, England. Ellen was one of four daughters of Anthony Rubens Montalba, who was also an artist from Sweden. Her mother was Emeline (née Davies). All four Montalba sisters became well-known artists.

A Family of Artists
Ellen Montalba grew up in a very artistic family. Her father, Anthony Rubens Montalba, was a painter. Ellen and her three sisters, Clara, Henrietta, and Hilda, all became successful artists. In 1871, the family lived in London, and all four daughters were listed as artists.
Ellen's Art Education
Ellen Montalba studied art at the South Kensington Schools in London. This school later became the famous Royal College of Art. She also spent time studying art in Europe, especially in Venice, Italy, where her family lived for a while.
What Ellen Painted
Ellen Montalba was known for painting different kinds of art. She created beautiful portraits of people, studies of human figures, and landscapes. Some of her portraits were life-size, meaning they were as big as the person she was painting.
She painted a portrait of her sister, Clara, who was also a famous artist. Ellen also painted a portrait of Princess Louise, who was a daughter of Queen Victoria.
Exhibiting Her Work
The Montalba sisters often showed their artwork at important exhibitions. Ellen and her sisters regularly displayed their paintings at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London during the 1870s. This was a very important art show in Britain.
Ellen also showed her art in the United States. She exhibited her work at the Woman's Building during the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. This was a huge world's fair, and the Woman's Building celebrated the achievements of women.
Later Life and Legacy
Ellen Emeline Montalba passed away on February 22, 1930, when she was 88 years old. She died at her family's home in Venice, Italy, called Palazzo Trevisan. Her remains were cremated and buried in the Protestant Section of Cimitero di San Michele, a cemetery in Venice.
