Ellen Trotzig (born March 5, 1878 – died November 6, 1949) was a talented Swedish artist. She lived in a beautiful area called Österlen and was known as the "first painter of the East" because she was one of the first artists to focus on painting that region.

Ellen Trotzig was born in Malmö, Sweden, in 1878. When she was five, her family moved to Simrishamn. They lived there for many years. After her father passed away, her mother moved the family back to Malmö.

Ellen was 18 when her father died. Luckily, her uncle Fredrik saw her artistic talent. He helped her get an education in art. She studied at several schools, including the Valand School of Fine Arts in Gothenburg. She also learned from famous artist Christian Krohg in Paris at the Académie Colarossi.

In Paris, Ellen met other artists from Scandinavia, like Tora Vega Holmström. She became more confident in her art when the Gothenburg Art Museum bought one of her portraits in 1908. This was a big step for her!

Becoming the "First Painter of the East"

Ellen soon realized she loved painting nature more than people. When she returned to Sweden, she decided to move to the eastern part of the country. She loved the special light and the wild, rugged landscapes there.

Other artists would later follow her lead. But for a long time, she was known as "the first painter of the East." This title became strongly connected to her. She enjoyed painting flowers and also created portraits, like one of Martha Lyzell in 1914. Martha and Ellen later lived together in Ellen's childhood hometown of Simrishamn.

Ellen Trotzig often painted dark landscapes. These paintings were usually filled with shades of blue, brown, and green.

Legacy and Support for Young Artists

Ellen Trotzig passed away at her home in Simrishamn in 1949. Before she died, she left special instructions. She wanted her paintings to be sold. The money from these sales would then be used to create a charity. This charity helps support young artists today.
