Simrishamn is a charming coastal town in Sweden. It is located in Skåne County. In 2010, about 6,527 people lived there. Even though it's not very big, people still call it a "city." This is because of its long history.
Simrishamn is a really pretty town right by the sea. Its main street, called Storgatan, goes through the center. You'll find the market square there, which is the heart of the town. Simrishamn has a mild climate. This is thanks to the warm Gulf Stream and the Baltic Sea. The weather here is similar to Paris, France.

Discovering Simrishamn's Past
Simrishamn has a long and interesting history. It was first mentioned in old writings in 1161. Back then, it was called Symbrishafn. It became known as a town in 1361.
What's in a Name?
The name Simris likely means "at the mouth of the slow-flowing river." The word hamn means "port" or "harbor." So, Simrishamn means "port at the river's mouth." This river is now called Tommarpsån. Some people think the name might even be linked to an old Germanic tribe called the Cimbri.
Simrishamn Through the Centuries
In 1658, a big change happened. The area, called Scania, moved from Denmark to Sweden. This was after the Treaty of Roskilde. At that time, only about 200 people lived in Simrishamn. The town grew slowly for a long time. By 1810, about 700 people lived there. This number grew to 1,365 by 1850 and 1,966 by 1890.
Modern Simrishamn
A big change in local government happened in 1971. Simrishamn became the main town for the larger Simrishamn Municipality. This new municipality had about 20,000 people.
Simrishamn's Weather and Climate
Simrishamn has a special climate because it's right by the sea. The nearest weather station is in Skillinge. This town is about 10 kilometers (6 miles) down the coast. Skillinge also sits right on the open sea.
Understanding the Local Climate
The area around Simrishamn, called Österlen, has a oceanic climate. This means the sea makes the weather milder. Summers are a bit warmer inland. Österlen is also drier than other parts of Southern Sweden. The cool Baltic Sea keeps July days a few degrees cooler right on the coast. This is different from places further north or west in Sweden.
Seasonal Changes by the Sea
The sea greatly affects the local weather. For example, August often has the warmest summer nights. September is much warmer than May. This is because the sea water slowly warms up over the summer. In winter, the sea has the opposite effect. It keeps the coast warmer. Average high temperatures are above 3°C (37°F). Frosts are usually light, even if they happen often.
Weather Records
Weather records for Skillinge began in 1995. So, they don't show the very coldest or hottest days from long ago. Simrishamn had its own weather station from 1951 to 1996.
