Elliott Nugent was born in Dover, Ohio. His father, J. C. Nugent, was also an actor. Elliott went to Ohio State University for his education.
He became very good at acting and directing in both silent movies and the new "talkie" films. This was a big change in movie history, and Elliott successfully moved from one type of film to the other.

Later, he directed the movie version of The Male Animal in 1942, which starred Henry Fonda and Olivia de Havilland.
Elliott Nugent passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in New York City.
