Learning and Living

When Ellis was a teenager, he traveled to the Red River Colony. There, he learned to read, write, and speak English. Christian teachers helped him with his studies. Ellis lived in the area near Kamiah, Idaho. He was involved in farming and raising animals there.

Becoming a Leader

Ellis made history by becoming the first person to be elected leader of the Nez Perce. He received help from Elijah White, who was a U.S. Indian agent for the Oregon Country. However, Ellis faced a challenge. Some of his people did not fully respect him. This was because he had not earned honors in hunting or war, which were traditional ways to gain respect. After his election, he became quite proud, which also made it harder for him to gain everyone's full support.

His Final Days

In March 1848, sad news reached the Nez Perce leaders. They heard that Ellis and about sixty people from his group had died. It was believed they died from measles. Ellis's death caused some disagreements between his followers and the white settlers. After Ellis passed away, a young man named Richard was chosen to be the new leader of the Nez Perce.
