History of Ellisburg
Ellisburg got its name from the important Ellis family. They were among the first people to settle in this area.
The very first buildings in Ellisburg were a blacksmith shop and a tavern. A blacksmith makes things out of metal, and a tavern was a place where people could eat, drink, and stay the night. These places attracted more people to live nearby.
Soon, a stagecoach started stopping at the tavern. A stagecoach was like an old-fashioned bus pulled by horses. This stop made the area grow even more. The original center of Ellisburg was where two main roads crossed: Cooper's Creek Road (now called Route 70) and Haddonfield-Moorestown Road (also known as King's Highway).
Geography of Ellisburg
