What is Ellsworth Like?

Ellsworth started in the late 1800s. It was built as a "company town" for the Spade Ranch. A company town is a place where most of the homes and businesses are owned by one company, often for its workers. Ellsworth also became a place where cattle could be shipped by train. It was named after Ellsworth, Minnesota.

Today, even though it's unincorporated, Ellsworth still has one business. This is Morgan's Store, which also serves as the local post office. Its ZIP code is 69340.

A Look at Ellsworth's History

In 1888, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad chose this spot for a train depot and a water stop. A depot is a train station, and a water stop was where steam trains could refill their water tanks.

Around the same time, a cattle rancher named Bartlett Richards began building the huge Spade Ranch. This made Ellsworth a company town for the ranch.

In 1898, the two-story Spade Ranch Store was built. It provided supplies for wagons heading north to the main Spade Ranch area. A hotel was also built across from the store, and a windmill was placed in the middle of town.

Bartlett Richards built a brick summer home north of the store in 1904. The Ellsworth School House was built in 1932 and taught students until 2007. Today, the Old Spade Ranch Store is the only business still open in the community.
