Ellsworth Burnett was born in Madrid, New York. The exact date of his birth is not fully known. He later moved to River Falls, Wisconsin. In Wisconsin, he worked in the lumber industry, which means cutting down trees for wood. He was also involved in farming, growing crops and raising animals.

Serving in the Civil War

During the American Civil War, Ellsworth Burnett joined the Union Army. He first served with the 30th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. There, he became a sergeant, which is a non-commissioned officer rank. Later, he joined the 37th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This group was part of the Army of the Potomac, a major Union army.

Burnett showed great bravery and skill during the war. He became a captain, a higher officer rank. For his excellent actions during the Siege of Petersburg, he was given the honorary rank of major. This is called being "brevetted" a major. It means he was recognized for his outstanding performance.

Family and Later Years

On November 24, 1873, Ellsworth Burnett married Amelia Frances Cox. He lived until April 14, 1895, when he passed away.
