Elm Farm, also known as Sargent Farm, is a historic farm in Danville, New Hampshire. You can find it at 599 Main Street. This farm has been used for growing crops and raising animals since about 1835.

Many of its owners also ran small businesses from the farm. The main farmhouse is a great example of Gothic Revival architecture. This special property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

What is Elm Farm Like?

Elm Farm is located in the countryside of northern Danville. It sits on the west side of Main Street. The farm covers about 85 acres (34 ha) of land. This land stretches west all the way to the town of Sandown.

The western part of the farm has woods and swampy areas. Closer to the road, about 30 acres (12 ha) of land is used for crops and pastures. This is also where the farm buildings are located.

The Farmhouse and Buildings

The farmstead has a typical 19th-century New England design. It uses a "connected construction" style. This means the buildings are linked together. The main farmhouse is two-and-a-half stories tall. It shows off both Greek Revival and Gothic Revival styles.

The farmhouse is connected by two smaller sections, called ells. These ells lead to a three-story stable. South of these main buildings, you'll find other farm structures. These include another stable, a cow barn, a carriage barn, an equipment shed, and a hen house. The farmhouse is special in Danville because it's one of the few examples of Gothic architecture in the town.

A Look at Elm Farm's History

Elm Farm has been used for farming since at least 1835. That's when Samuel Sargent Jr. bought part of the land. This land was originally granted in 1760.

Family Businesses at the Farm

Besides farming, Samuel Sargent Jr. also made barrels and chairs. His son, Bailey Sargent, ran several businesses. He had a cider mill and offered stabling services for horses.

Bailey's son, Alfred, even ran a small printing business here. Another son, Herbert, repaired clocks. These small businesses were often set up in the second ell of the farmhouse. This part of the building might have been built just for these non-farming activities.
