Elmhurst is a historic and beautiful neighborhood in the eastern part of Sacramento, California. It's well-known for its many large elm, ash, and oak trees. These trees create a wonderful, shady cover over the streets and homes.

The Story of Elmhurst: A Look Back

Elmhurst was created around 1908. A man named H. A. McClelland bought about 250 acres (1 square kilometer) of land southeast of Sacramento. He wanted to build a new neighborhood there.

One special feature of the new area was California Boulevard. This street ran right through the middle of the neighborhood. It had two parks in the center, like a grassy island. Sunset Park was on the west side, and Sierra Vista Park was on the east.

Becoming Part of Sacramento

In 1911, Elmhurst officially became part of the city of Sacramento. The city expanded its borders to include areas south and east of its original downtown. A few years later, in 1916, Sacramento decided to make all its street names consistent. California Boulevard then became an extension of T Street.

The Coloma Community Center

A school was built for the Elmhurst neighborhood in 1921. It was first called Elmhurst School. Just one year later, the school was made bigger and renamed "Coloma School." This school served the community for 57 years. It closed its doors in 1978.

The building was saved from being torn down. The Sacramento City Council decided to buy it. In 1981, the building was officially opened as the Coloma Community Center. Today, it's a busy place for local residents.

Changes Over Time

Elmhurst has mostly stayed the same since it was first created. However, there was one big change in the early 1970s. The northern border of the neighborhood moved slightly south. This happened when U.S. Route 50 was improved and moved to its current path. Before that, the neighborhood stretched further north to the Southern Pacific Railroad line.
