Elmira got its own post office in 1892. A post office is where people send and receive mail. This post office stayed open for many years, until 1954.

Elmira was an important stop for miners. These miners used pack-horses to carry their tools and supplies. The community helped them on their long journeys.
How Many People Lived in Elmira?
In 1909, about 50 people lived in Elmira. By 1960, the number of people living there was estimated to be around 20.
