The native names for Elmo are sqʷʔeʔ in the Salish language and k̓upawi¢q̓nuk in the Kutenai language. In 2010, about 180 people lived here. By 2020, the population grew to 244 people.

The town of Elmo was officially planned in 1917. It used to have a dock and a warehouse. These were important for boats traveling on Flathead Lake.

Another road, Montana Highway 28, starts in Elmo. It goes southwest about 46 miles (74 km) to Montana Highway 200 near Plains.
