A Look Back at Elmore Township
Elmore Township was officially created on August 13, 1821. It was formed from the northern part of Bogard Township. The township was named after the Elmore family. They arrived in 1818, two years after the first settlers. However, they owned land near where the township's votes were cast.
The number of people living in the township changed a lot in its early years. Many people built boats and traveled down the White River. At the same time, many new people from other states moved into the township. A big growth spurt happened in 1825. At least five families from Tennessee and one family from Kentucky settled in Elmore Township then.
