About Elmshaven
Elmshaven is in a quiet, country-like area north of downtown St. Helena. The main house is a two-story building made of redwood. It has a classic Victorian style, with a tall, square tower on the front corner. This tower has a pointed roof. The front of the house also has a part that sticks out, with the main door to its left. A porch with pretty railings covers the entrance.
Inside the house, many things are still the same as when it was built. They also look like they did when Ellen White lived there. The property also has a small building that held a large water tank. There is also a two-story wooden building that Ellen White used as her office, library, and for storage.
A Home for Ellen White
The house was built in 1885 by a man named Robert H. Pratt. It was first called the Robert Pratt Place. Ellen White bought the home in 1900. She decided to name it "Elmshaven" because of the many elm trees growing in front of it.
Ellen White lived in Elmshaven for 15 years, until her death in 1915. Of all the places she lived, Elmshaven is the one that has been kept the best. It is also the home where she lived the longest. Because of its history, it was named a National Historic Landmark in 1993. In 2020, wildfires came close to Elmshaven, but luckily, the house was not damaged.
