About Elmshaven
Elmshaven is in a quiet, country-like area just north of downtown St. Helena. It sits on the east side of Glass Mountain Lane. The main house is a two-story building made of redwood. Its outside walls are covered with flat wooden boards called shiplap siding.
House Style and Features
The house has a style known as Victorian architecture. This means it has many decorative details and interesting shapes. One special part is a square tower, called a turret, on the front right corner. This turret has a pointy roof.
The middle part of the front of the house sticks out and has a triangular roof section. The main front door is to the left of this section. A porch with pretty railings on two levels covers the entrance. Inside, many parts of the house are still the same as when it was built or when Ellen White lived there.
Other Buildings on the Property
Besides the main house, there are other buildings on the property. One is a tank house, which held a large water tank. There is also a two-story wooden building. This building was used as an office, a library, and a safe place for storage.
History of the House
The house was built in 1885 by a person named Robert H. Pratt. At first, it was known as the Robert Pratt Place.
Ellen White's Home
Ellen White bought the house in 1900. She decided to name it "Elmshaven" because there was a line of elm trees in front of it. She lived in this house for 15 years, until her death in 1915. Of all the places Ellen White lived, Elmshaven is the best preserved. It is also the home where she lived the longest.
National Recognition
Because of its importance, Elmshaven was officially named a National Historic Landmark in 1993. This means it is a place of great historical value to the United States.
Recent Events
In 2020, there were wildfires in the area that came close to Elmshaven. Luckily, the house was not damaged by the fires.
