Elmtown is a small, unincorporated community in Anderson County, Texas. This means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It is located near the city of Palestine.
The Story of Elmtown
Elmtown got its name from the many elm trees that grew along a nearby stream. This stream was called Mound Prairie creek.
A post office opened in Elmtown in 1901. It helped people send and receive mail. However, it closed just five years later, in 1906.
By 1933, Elmtown was very small. It had only two businesses and about ten people living there. Later in the 1930s, the population grew to around 50 people.
In the 1940s, a factory operated in Elmtown. By the 1980s, most of the community was gone. Only a cemetery remained at the main crossroads. Even then, Elmtown was still shown on county maps. This helped people find the area.
Where is Elmtown?
Elmtown is located in the northern part of Anderson County. You can find it where an unnamed county road meets Farm to Market Road 315. It is about 9 miles (14 kilometers) north of Palestine.
