Elmwood Place is a historic farm property in Union County, Ohio. It is located near the town of Irwin. This special place has six different buildings. They are spread out over an area of about 9 acres (3.6 hectares).
About Elmwood Place
Elmwood Place is a very old farm. It shows how farms looked in the 1800s. The buildings are still in great shape today. This makes Elmwood Place a good example of old farm architecture.
Building the Farm
In 1866, James Fullington bought the land for Elmwood Place. At that time, it was just open fields. James Fullington was a very important landowner in Union County. He soon started building the farm.
The first building finished was the main farmhouse. It was ready in 1868. Two years later, in 1870, a carriage house and a large barn were built. By 1877, the rest of the buildings were finished. These included two small sheds and a cottage for workers. The cottage was moved from another spot to its current place.
Special Architecture
The most impressive building at Elmwood Place is the farmhouse. It is a large building made of brick. It has a nice porch where people could sit. The house was built with many special details. These details are part of a style called Italianate architecture.
Italianate buildings often have decorative parts under the roof. They also have arched windows and doors. Many parts inside the farmhouse also show this style. Because the farmhouse and other buildings are so well-preserved, Elmwood Place is very important. It is one of the best examples of 19th-century farm buildings in Union County.
A Historic Landmark
Because of its importance, Elmwood Place was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Elmwood Place is one of only seven places in Union County to be on this list.
