Eloise is a very famous children's book. It is the first book in the popular Eloise series. The story was written by Kay Thompson. The fun drawings were created by Hilary Knight.
The book was first published in 1955. Its original title was Eloise: A Book for Precocious Grown-ups. "Precocious" means being very smart or grown-up for your age. In 1969, the book was re-released as a regular children's book.
Later, in October 2015, an audiobook version of Eloise came out. This was to celebrate the series' 60th anniversary. The audiobook is read by the talented actress Bernadette Peters.
Eloise on Screen: Adaptations
Sometimes, a popular book is made into a movie or a TV show. This is called an "adaptation." The Eloise book has been adapted several times for television.
Early TV Play
In 1956, Eloise became a 90-minute television play. It was shown on a TV show called Playhouse 90 on the CBS channel. This was one of the first times Eloise came to life on screen!
Live-Action TV Movies
Years later, in 2003, two new live-action TV movies were made. These movies starred real actors.
- The first movie was called Eloise at the Plaza. It was released on April 23, 2003. Walt Disney Television helped make this film.
- The second movie was Eloise at Christmastime. It came out later that same year, on November 22, 2003.
Both movies were available on VHS and DVD. This allowed many more people to watch Eloise's adventures at home.
