Els Aarne (born Else Paemurru; March 30, 1917 – June 14, 1995) was an important Estonian composer and a dedicated teacher. She helped many students learn about music.

Early Life and Education

Els Aarne was born in Makiivka, which was part of the Russian Empire at the time. Today, Makiivka is in Ukraine. She loved music from a young age.

She went to the Tallinn Conservatory in Estonia. This is a famous music school. She studied very hard and earned several degrees:

  • In 1939, she became a music teacher.
  • In 1942, she finished her studies as a pianist.
  • In 1946, she graduated as a composer. Her teacher for composition was the well-known musician Heino Eller.

Musical Compositions

Els Aarne was especially known for her chamber music. Chamber music is a type of classical music written for a small group of instruments. It's often played in a smaller room or "chamber" instead of a big concert hall.

She enjoyed writing music for string instruments like the violoncello and the double-bass.

  • A violoncello (or cello) is a large string instrument played while sitting down.
  • A double-bass is the largest string instrument in the orchestra, producing very low sounds.

Besides chamber music, Els Aarne also composed two symphonies. A symphony is a long piece of music for a full orchestra, usually with several different parts called movements.

Family Life

Els Aarne's son, Peeter Paemurru, also became a musician. He is a talented cellist, meaning he plays the cello. He has also been involved in politics.
