Elsa Gramcko (1925–1994) was a talented artist from Venezuela. She was famous for her unique abstract art as both a sculptor and a painter.
Her early artworks, starting in 1954, were mostly paintings with clear geometric shapes. Later, her style changed to be more free and expressive, using splashes and dabs of paint. In the 1960s and 1970s, she started making sculptures and assemblages. An assemblage is a type of art made by putting together different objects.

Elsa Gramcko was born on April 9, 1925, in Puerto Cabello, a city in Carabobo, Venezuela. Her sister, Ida Gramcko, was also a well-known writer and poet.
Early Exhibitions and Recognition
In 1959, Elsa Gramcko had her first art show all by herself. This show was organized by José Gómez-Sicre at the Art Museum of the Americas in Washington D.C. This was a big step for her career.
That same year, she represented Venezuela at the São Paulo Art Biennial. A biennial is a large art exhibition that happens every two years. She also showed her work at the Venice Biennale in 1964, another very important international art event.
Awards and Achievements
Elsa Gramcko received many important awards for her art. In 1966, she made history by becoming the first woman to win the top prize at the D'Empaire Salon. This art show was held in Maracaibo, Zulia State, Venezuela.
Two years later, in 1968, she was given the National Art Prize at the Official Salon of Venezuelan Art. This was another major award in her home country.
