Emília Coranty Llurià (born February 19, 1862 – died February 18, 1944) was a talented Spanish painter and drawing teacher. After she got married, her name became Emília Coranty de Guasch. She had strong connections to the cities of Barcelona and Valls in Spain.
Becoming an Artist
Emília Coranty Llurià was born in Barcelona, a big city in Spain. She started learning art at a special drawing school. This school was run by the local government of Barcelona.
She also studied at the Escola de la Llotja from 1885 to 1887. Then, she went to the Reial Acadèmia Catalana de Belles Arts de Sant Jordi from 1886 to 1888. These were important art schools in her time.
During a study trip to Rome, Italy, Emília met another painter named Francesc Guasch. They fell in love and got married in 1888.
Exhibitions and Awards
After getting married, Emília showed some of her paintings at a very big event. This was the 1888 Barcelona Universal Exposition, a huge world fair.
The next year, in 1889, she moved to Paris, France. From there, her art traveled to exhibitions all over the world. She became quite famous!
In 1893, Emília won a silver medal at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, USA. This was a special award given in the women's art section. She exhibited her work alongside other famous female artists like Mary Cassatt and Rosa Bonheur. In 1895, she also showed her art at the Exposition de Bordeaux in France.
Emília also worked as a teacher at the Escola de la Llotja. She spent her life working hard to make sure women could get good art training. She believed that all women should have the chance to study art well.
Her Legacy Lives On
Emília Coranty Llurià passed away in Barcelona on February 18, 1944. She is buried in the cemetery of Sarrià-Sant Gervasi next to her husband.
You can see her beautiful artwork in important museums today. Some of her paintings are kept at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya in Barcelona. Others are at the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
A special group called the Guasch Coranty Foundation was started in Barcelona. Emília helped create this foundation. It is still active today, supporting the arts and artists.
