Embarcación (Salta) is a town and a local government area in the Salta Province of northwestern Argentina. It's a place with a rich history and an important role in its region.
Discovering Embarcación's Past
Embarcación is located in the Salta Province of Argentina. It sits near where the Bermejo and San Francisco Rivers meet. This area was first home to the Wichí people. They lived by hunting and fishing along the Bermejo River.
Early European Settlements
Later, Jesuit missionaries arrived and set up the first European outposts. These were like small settlements or trading posts. They helped trade grow along the Bermejo River. The area where Embarcación is now was known informally as "Embarcación." This word means "boat" in Spanish. It got this name because of its good location for river travel.
How the Town Began
The land where Embarcación stands today was once owned by Celedonia Reyes de Prado. In 1909, she sold the land to two partners, the Leach brothers and Dr. Carlos Serrey. They divided the land into 48 smaller plots, each about one hectare (2.5 acres) in size.
The Arrival of the Train
A big change happened on November 28, 1911. The Central Northern Rail line arrived in the area. This made it much easier to sell and develop the land plots. Because of this fast growth, Embarcación officially became its own municipality (a local government area) on December 29, 1915. Before this, it was part of another town called San Ramón de la Nueva Orán.
Growing as a Community
Embarcación continued to grow after it became a municipality.
Important Buildings and Services
In 1917, the town opened its first civic offices and its first school. This was a big step for the community. In 1929, the Provincial Bank of Salta opened a branch in Embarcación. This helped people with their money and local businesses.
Community Spirit and Health
The people of Embarcación chose San Roque as their patron saint. In his honor, a hospital was opened in 1938. The main Catholic Parish church, built in the 1960s, is also named after San Roque.
A Gateway to Salta
In 1931, a new rail link was completed. This connected Embarcación to the city of Formosa. Because of this important connection, Embarcación earned the nickname el Portal de Salta, which means "the Gateway to Salta."
Life in Modern Embarcación
Today, Embarcación is a lively town with many services and activities.
Education and Media
The town is home to 13 schools, providing education for many children and young people. It also has six radio stations and a local television station called Universal Video Cable, which started in 1982. These media outlets help keep the community informed and entertained.
Economy and Work
Embarcación has a growing commercial sector with many shops and businesses. However, farming and related activities, especially growing fruits and vegetables, are still the main jobs for people in the town. Salvita is a local company that packs and distributes fruits and vegetables. It was started by Salvador Muñoz and is a major buyer for the area's farmers.
Community Improvements
In 2001, some homes in the town needed improvements. To help with this, the town started a big plan in 2010 to build and improve public facilities and housing. This shows the town's commitment to making life better for its residents.
