San Ramón de la Nueva Orán, often called just Orán, is a city in the northwest part of Salta, Argentina. It is about 270 kilometers (168 miles) from Salta, the main city of the province. Orán is the capital of the Orán Department.
With about 73,000 people (from the 2001 census), it is the second-largest city in the province. Orán is home to a Catholic diocese and a branch of the Universidad Nacional de Salta. You can reach Orán by National Route 50, which is close to National Route 34. The Orán Airport connects the city to the provincial capital by air.
Orán is a very important center in northern Salta. It has many key offices, like AFIP and Banco Nación. This makes it a central point for the whole Bermejo Region. The city has busy shopping areas and ways to travel to the border with Bolivia. A new freeway is being built to connect Orán to the city of Pichanal.

History of Orán
The city was founded on August 31, 1794. It was started by Ramón García de León y Pizarro, a Spanish military leader and governor of Salta.
He named the city after Saint Raymond Nonnatus, whose feast day was on the founding date. He also named it after his own hometown, the city of Oran in modern Algeria.
Economy and Industry
Orán is a key area for farming and related industries. Many different products are grown and processed here.
Sugar and Citrus Production
- Sugar cane: A lot of sugar cane is grown. Most of it goes to the Tabacal Sugarmill, which is near the city. This mill turns the cane into sugar.
- Citrus fruits: Oranges and grapefruits are major crops. They are mostly used to make concentrated juice by the Zenta fruit company. This company also sells fresh, whole fruits.
Other Fruits and Crops
Other fruits grown in Orán include chili peppers, bananas, cherimoyas, papayas, and mangoes. Coffee was also grown here, but in smaller amounts.
Soybeans and Biofuels
Soy is one of the most important farm products. The Orán department produces the most beans in Argentina. Recently, farmers have started growing soy, along with sugar cane and corn, to make biofuel. Biofuels are fuels made from plants. This helps with the shortage of gasoil in the area.
Forestry and Timber
Orán is surrounded by special forests where the Yungas jungles meet the Chaco tropical forests. This area has always been important for the timber industry, which uses wood from trees.
Livestock Farming
Raising animals like cattle and horses is also a big part of the economy. Historically, Orán was a common stop for cattle and horses traveling to Bolivia.
Climate in Orán
Orán has a humid subtropical climate with a clear dry season. This means it has hot, rainy summers and mild, dry winters. It is sometimes called "tropical serrano" because it is located where the Andes mountains meet the northern plains of Argentina.
