Ambassador Teuku Mohammad Hamzah Thayeb

The Embassy of Indonesia in London is like Indonesia's home base in the United Kingdom. It's a diplomatic mission, which means it's where Indonesian diplomats work to keep good relationships between Indonesia and the UK. They help Indonesian citizens living or visiting the UK and promote Indonesia's interests.

For many years, from when Indonesia became independent until February 2017, the embassy was located at 38 Grosvenor Square in an area called Mayfair. It was quite close to the American embassy.

Then, on March 1, 2017, the embassy moved to a new, bigger building. This new home is at 30 Great Peter Street in Westminster. Indonesia bought this building, which is very large, for £40 million.

A Look Back: The Embassy's Story

The first person to represent Indonesia officially in the United Kingdom was Dr. Subandrio. He started his work in 1949 and served until 1954.

Since then, 18 different people have served as Ambassadors. An ambassador is the main diplomat who leads the embassy. These ambassadors have come from different backgrounds, including military leaders like air marshals and lieutenants. One notable ambassador was Raden Mohammad Marty Muliana Natalegawa, who later became Indonesia's Minister of Foreign Affairs.

How the Embassy Works: Departments

The embassy has several different teams, called departments, that help it do its job. Currently, there are 10 departments. Each department focuses on a different area to help strengthen the ties between Indonesia and the UK.

For example, there are two Defence Attachés. These people work on military and defense cooperation. There is also a Transportation Attaché, who helps with travel and transport matters, and a Trade Attaché, who works to improve business and trade between the two countries. An Educational Attaché focuses on education and cultural exchange programs.
