The Emerald Coast Science Center (ECSC) is a fun place in Fort Walton Beach, Okaloosa County, Florida. It's a "hands-on" science center, which means you get to touch and try out the exhibits yourself! It's a great spot to learn about science in an exciting way.

The center first opened its doors in 1989. Back then, it was called the FOCUS Center. FOCUS stood for "Families of Okaloosa County Understanding Science." In 2001, its name changed to the Emerald Coast Science Center. ECSC is a nonprofit organization. This means it's not trying to make money. Instead, its main goal is to inspire people to get excited about science. It wants to help the community learn and grow with science.

What You Can Explore

The Emerald Coast Science Center has many cool exhibits. You can find things to explore both inside and outside the building.

Inside the Center

Inside, there are several special rooms and open areas.

  • Animal Room: Here, you can meet different animals and learn about them.
  • Makerspace Room: This is a creative area where you can build and invent things. It's a place to design and make your own projects.
  • KITS in the Kitchen: This area lets you explore science using everyday kitchen items. You can do fun experiments with food and cooking.
  • Florida Ecosystem Exhibit: This room teaches you about the plants and animals that live in Florida. You can learn how they all fit together in nature.

There are also two large halls inside. These halls are full of interactive exhibits. You can find brain games that challenge your mind. There are also robotics exhibits where you can see robots in action. Many other hands-on displays are available for you to try.

Outside the Center

The fun continues outside the building.

  • Turtle Habitat: You can see turtles in their outdoor home.
  • Butterfly Garden: This garden is filled with plants that attract beautiful butterflies. It's a peaceful place to watch them fly.
  • Shuffleboard Court: You can even play a game of shuffleboard!
