Emerson Point Preserve is a cool natural area in Manatee County, Florida. It's about 365-acre (1.48 km2) big, which is like 275 football fields! You can find it west of Palmetto, right at the end of Snead Island. It's a great place to explore nature and learn about history.

How Emerson Point Preserve Was Saved

Imagine a beautiful piece of land that almost became a giant apartment building! That's what nearly happened at Emerson Point.

Plans for a Condo Building

In the early 1980s, there were plans to build a tall, eight-story condo right on the tip of Emerson Point. This building would have covered about three acres of the land.

Local People Step In

But many people in the area didn't want a big building there. They wanted to keep the land natural and open for everyone to enjoy. Because of this strong local opposition, the county decided to stop the condo project.

Becoming a Public Park

Instead of a condo, the county and state worked together to buy the land for public use. The first part of what was then called "Emerson Point Park" was officially bought by the state on October 23, 1991.

Funding the Preserve

About 195 acres were bought using a special program called the Conservation and Recreation Lands (CARL) program. This program helps protect important natural areas. Today, it's known as the Florida Forever program. The state paid 70% of the cost, and the county paid the remaining 30%. This teamwork helped create the amazing preserve we have today!

What You Can See at Emerson Point Preserve

Emerson Point Preserve is full of interesting things to see and do. It's a mix of nature, history, and amazing views.

Ancient Native American Mounds

The preserve is home to several ancient mounds built by Native American people long ago. These mounds are part of what's called the Portavant Mound Site. They are important historical sites that tell us about the people who lived here before us.

Climb the Observation Tower

One of the coolest features is a tall observation tower. If you climb to the top, you'll get incredible views! You can see across Terra Ceia Bay, the huge Tampa Bay, and even spot the famous Sunshine Skyway Bridge in the distance. It's a perfect spot for taking photos and enjoying the scenery.
