Emigrant Gap is a small community in Placer County, California. It's not a city with its own government, but a place where people live. This community is located about 0.25 miles (0.4 km) southwest of a famous spot also called Emigrant Gap. It sits high up in the mountains, at 5,190 feet (1,582 meters) above sea level.

History of Emigrant Gap

Emigrant Gap was once known by a different name: Wilsons Ranch. This name honored a person who ran a stagecoach stop there. A stagecoach stop was a place where horse-drawn coaches could rest and change horses during long journeys.

The Wilsons Ranch post office first opened in 1865. Just three years later, in 1868, its name was changed to Emigrant Gap.
