Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Emil Schlagintweit (born July 7, 1835, died October 29, 1904) was a German scholar. He is best known for his important work studying Buddhism in Tibet.

Emil's Early Life and Family

Emil was the youngest of five Schlagintweit brothers from Munich, Germany. His father was a wealthy eye surgeon. Emil's mother passed away when he was quite young. He was taught by Franz Joseph Lauth, who later became a famous Egyptologist (someone who studies ancient Egypt).

The brothers became very interested in exploring. This interest was sparked by a book called Cosmos by Alexander von Humboldt. The first part of this book came out in 1845. This book led the brothers to explore the Alps mountains and later the mountains of Asia.

Emil's Inheritance and Collections

Emil Schlagintweit was not an explorer himself. After his brother Hermann passed away in 1882, Emil inherited Schloß Jägersburg. This was their large family estate located near Forchheim. He also received all of his brothers' collections and important papers.

Emil decided to sell 102 Tibetan manuscripts and block-books. His brothers had collected these items during their travels. He sold them to the Bodleian Library at Oxford University in England. These valuable items are still kept there today.
