Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Jean-Pierre Emile Boeres (1890–1944) was a talented musician from Luxembourg. He was a composer, an organist (someone who plays the organ), and a choir master (who leads a singing group).

He was born in Luxembourg City on November 13, 1890. Jean-Pierre Boeres wrote many operettas and musical comedies. These were all in the Luxembourgish language. In 1934, he started two important groups: the Wiener Operette and the Lëtzebuerger Musekerverband. He also wrote for a magazine called the Lëtzebuerger Revue.

Music During Difficult Times

During World War II, Luxembourg was occupied by German forces. The German authorities preferred plays and music in German. They were suspicious of anything in Luxembourgish. They thought Luxembourgish performances might show opposition to their rule.

On November 18, 1940, Boeres' operetta Wann d'Blieder falen (which means When the Leaves Fall) was performed. It was a huge success! People came to the Théâtre des Capucins to watch it. By attending a show in their own language, the audience showed their support for a free Luxembourg. This was a way for them to express their feelings without directly saying anything.

Later Life and Works

Jean-Pierre Boeres continued to create music. Sadly, he died in Luxembourg City on August 18, 1944. This happened after a cycling accident.

Here are some of his well-known works:

  • 1935: "Fre'johr"
  • 1936: "Spuenescht Blutt"
  • 1936: "Wann d'Blieder falen"
  • 1937: "Landstroosselidd"
  • 1939: "Den éiwege Wee"
  • 1941: "D'Wonner vu Spe'sbech"
