About Emilio Alvarez
Early Life and Faith Journey
Emilio Alvarez, whose full name is Emilio Alvarez Jr., grew up in a Holiness-Pentecostal family. His father was a bishop in the Church of God (Cleveland, Tennessee). As a minister, Alvarez began to explore other Christian traditions. He became interested in the Convergence Movement. This movement blends different styles of worship and beliefs.
Becoming a Bishop
In 2011, Alvarez became a bishop for the Communion of Evangelical Episcopal Churches. This was an important step in his religious career. In 2014, he was invited to meet Pope Francis. Alvarez even helped as an official translator during their meeting. The meeting was about "The Miracle of Unity," focusing on how different churches can work together.
Leading a New Church
In July 2019, Alvarez helped create the Union of Charismatic Orthodox Churches. This new church was started in Painted Post, New York. He was chosen to lead it as its first primate. A primate is a main bishop who leads a group of churches. In December 2020, he was hosted by Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, a leader in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America.
In 2021, Emilio Alvarez was officially installed as the archbishop and primate for the Union of Charismatic Orthodox Churches.
Teaching and Writing
In 2022, Alvarez wrote a book called Pentecostal Orthodoxy: Toward an Ecumenism of the Spirit. This book explores how different Christian groups can find common ground. He also became a leader at Asbury Theological Seminary. He moved from Rochester, New York, where he was a pastor.
In 2025, Alvarez took on a new role. He became the Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School. This means he helps lead the school and its studies.
