Early Career and Grand Prix Debut
Emilio Alzamora started racing motorcycles when he was young. In 1989, at just 16 years old, he won the 80cc championship in Catalunya, Spain. This showed everyone he had a lot of talent.
In 1994, Emilio joined the Grand Prix circuit. He started in the 125cc class, which is for lighter motorcycles. He was part of a team led by former world champion Paolo Pileri.
Moving Up and Back Down
After a few years in the 125cc class, Emilio moved up to the more powerful 250cc class in 1997. However, that season was tough for him because of injuries. Because of these injuries, he decided to return to the 125cc class.
Becoming a World Champion
The year 1999 was Emilio's most successful. He competed in the 125cc world championship. Even though he didn't win any individual races, he finished on the podium (in the top three) ten times! This amazing consistency helped him earn enough points to win the championship. He beat other strong riders like Marco Melandri and Masao Azuma, who each had five race wins that year. Emilio is only the second rider in history to win a Grand Prix motorcycle world championship without winning a race. He continued to race until the 2003 season.
Life After Racing
After retiring from racing in 2003, Emilio Alzamora stayed involved in the world of motorcycles. Since 2005, he has been the director of the Monlau Competición technical school. He also helps manage young motorcycle racers. He guides them from their early training all the way up to the Moto3 World Championship, working with teams like Estrella Galicia 0,0. This means he helps new talent become future champions!
