A Business Leader

In 1923, Emilio Heydrich started a company called Colores Hispania S.A. This company sold painting products. By 1927, he began making his own chemical products and supplies. For this, he built new factory buildings in Poblenou, a neighborhood in Barcelona.

During the Spanish Civil War, like many factories in Barcelona, his company was taken over by its workers. This means the workers managed the factory themselves for a while. However, after the war, Emilio Heydrich forgave the workers. He continued to run the company with the same employees until he passed away in 1947. The company kept going until the year 2000. The old factory area, with its original building fronts, was bought in 1960 by a textile company called Miro. Today, these buildings are protected as historical sites by the government of Catalonia.

Important Buildings

Emilio Heydrich's factory for Colores Hispania SA is located on Calle Pere lV, number 482, in Poblenou, Barcelona. It is a great example of factory architecture from the early 1900s. The architect, Josep Graner, designed the front of the building to look very special. This factory still stands today and is recognized as an important historical place.

Emilio Heydrich y Martínez also lived in a house on Calle Iradier, in the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district of Barcelona. This house, called La Torre de San Fernando, was one of the first buildings designed by the architect Joaquim Lloret i Homs. Lloret i Homs built several grand houses in this area. He was also well-known for designing the modern Barraquer Ophthalmology Center in Barcelona between 1934 and 1939. Heydrich's house is considered one of the important classic-style palaces in the Sarria-Gervasi neighborhood. Since 1960, it has been used as a local police station, known as the Comisaria de los Mossos de Escuadra.

In Lloret de Mar, a town on the coast, Emilio Heydrich built a house called Casa Aida in 1921. Many Spanish Cubans who returned to Spain built their homes in a style known as Los Indianos [es]. The architect Jose Gallart designed Casa Aida as a cube-shaped family home. It stayed in the Heydrich family until 2006. The last family owner was Heydrich's great-grandson, the artist Daniel Garbade.

Emilio Heydrich died in Lloret de Mar in 1947. He is buried there in the modern-style cemetery, the Cementerio de Lloret de Mar [es].
