Lady Emily Hay, Lady Peel (born 1836 – died 1924), was a noblewoman from Scotland. She was the daughter of George Hay, the 8th Marquess of Tweeddale, and Lady Susan Montagu. Emily was one of ten children in her family. She was born in a place called Yester, in East Lothian, Scotland, and was baptised there on February 28, 1837.
Lady Emily's Family Life
On January 13, 1856, Lady Emily married Sir Robert Peel, who was the 3rd Baronet. His father, also named Sir Robert Peel, was a famous Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Lady Emily and Sir Robert had five children. In 1860, they welcomed twin daughters, Gwendolin Cecilia and Agnes Helen. Later, they had Victoria Alexandrina Julia (born 1865), Robert (born 1867), and Evelyn Emily (born 1869).
Her husband, Sir Robert Peel, passed away suddenly on May 9, 1895, when he was 73 years old. He was buried in Drayton-Bassett. Their only son, Robert, then became the next Baronet.
Her Interests and Legacy
Lady Peel had a special interest in dog racing. She was also known for breeding Borzoi dogs, which are a type of large Russian hunting dog. Many of her Borzoi dogs won awards.
A famous French rose grower named François Lacharme even named a new type of rose after her. This shows how well-known and respected she was.
Lady Peel lived to be 88 years old. She passed away on April 4, 1924, in Florence, Italy.
