Emily Climbs is the second book in a series of novels by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It was first published in 1925. L.M. Montgomery also wrote the famous Anne of Green Gables books.

Montgomery wanted to create a new hero. She was also writing in her own journal from when she was younger. This helped her create the character of Emily. Many parts of Emily's story are like Montgomery's own life.

About the Book

The book shows how Emily wants to be a writer. She is like L.M. Montgomery herself. Both Emily and Montgomery felt a strong connection to nature and beauty. They both wanted to follow a special path to become writers.

Emily also has a unique experience called "The Flash." This is a moment where she feels a deep connection to the world. It is a special feeling that helps her with her writing.

Here is how L.M. Montgomery described her own feelings, which are very similar to Emily's:

L.M. Montgomery's own words (1917) Emily's feelings in the book (1923)
I always felt very close to a beautiful, ideal world. It was like a thin curtain was between us. I could never fully open it. But sometimes, a breeze would lift it. Then I would see a glimpse of that amazing world. These glimpses always made life worth living. Emily always felt very close to a world of wonderful beauty. A thin curtain hung between her and this world. She could never pull the curtain aside. But sometimes, for a moment, a wind would flutter it. Then she would see a glimpse of that amazing place. She would also hear a note of beautiful music.

Story Summary

Emily Byrd Starr really wants to go to Queen's Academy. She hopes to become a teacher. But her family at New Moon says no. Instead, they offer her a chance to go to Shrewsbury High School. She can go with her friends, but there are two rules.

First, she has to live with her Aunt Ruth. Emily does not like Aunt Ruth very much. The second rule is harder for Emily. She must not write anything (except for schoolwork) while she is in high school.

Emily first says no to this offer. She cannot imagine life without writing. But her Cousin Jimmy changes the rule a little. He says she can write things that are true. This means she cannot write made-up stories. Emily thinks this is not much better. But it turns out to be a great way for her to practice her writing skills.

Emily often argues with Aunt Ruth. Aunt Ruth is always suspicious and rarely believes Emily. After more than a year, Emily gets very upset. She walks seven miles back to New Moon in the middle of the night. She talks to Cousin Jimmy about her feelings. Then she walks all the way back to Aunt Ruth's house.

Emily's friendship with Ilse Burnley is tested. Another student, Evelyn Blake, is jealous of Emily. Evelyn tries to act better than Emily. Emily finally wins against Evelyn. She finds proof that Evelyn copied an old poem. Evelyn used it to win a school contest. Emily does not tell everyone. She only shows the proof to Evelyn. Evelyn then admits she cheated. She did it so her father would let her go on a trip.

Because Aunt Elizabeth banned her from writing fiction, Emily starts to get better at storytelling. She writes "portraits" of people. She also keeps a detailed journal. Emily has many adventures. These give her ideas for stories and poems. She even earns money from a short story. It was called "The Woman Who Spanked the King." An old Scottish woman told her the story.

Emily also starts to think about romance. She and Teddy Kent become closer. But Teddy's mother is jealous. This causes problems for Emily and Teddy. Emily turns down marriage proposals from her childhood friend Perry Miller. She also says no to her cousin Andrew. But she stays good friends with Dean Priest.

At the end of the book, Emily is a young writer. A famous writer, Janet Royal, offers Emily a chance to move to New York. This would help Emily's career. Emily thinks about it a lot. But she decides to stay at her beloved New Moon. She wants to find fame in her own way.
