The Story of Emily
The show tells the story of a young orphan girl named Emily Starr. She goes to live at New Moon Farm on Prince Edward Island. This happens after her father passes away from a serious illness. Emily lives with her aunts, Elizabeth and Laura Murray, and her cousin Jimmy.
Emily quickly makes new friends. Her friends are Ilse Burnley, Teddy Kent, and Perry Miller. Perry is a boy who works on the farm. Aunt Elizabeth, Emily's aunt, doesn't always approve of Perry. This is because he comes from a poorer part of town.
Special Talents and Family Challenges
Each of Emily's friends has a special talent:
- Emily loves to write and wants to be a writer.
- Teddy is a very talented artist.
- Ilse is good at speaking and performing.
- Perry has the skills to become a great politician.
However, they all face some challenges with their families. Emily finds it hard to get along with Aunt Elizabeth. Her aunt doesn't understand Emily's passion for writing. Ilse's father, Dr. Burnley, often ignores her. This is due to a sad secret about Ilse's mother. Teddy's mother is worried that his friends and art will make him love her less. Because of this, she doesn't like Emily or Teddy's drawings. Perry comes from a less wealthy family. His Aunt Tom once tried to make Emily promise to marry Perry. She said she wouldn't pay for Perry's schooling otherwise.
Other Important Characters
You'll also meet other interesting characters:
- Dean "Jarback" Priest is a quiet and mysterious person.
- Mr. Carpenter is a strict but fair schoolteacher. He helps Emily with her stories and poems.
- "Simple" Cousin Jimmy often recites his own poetry.
- Aunt Laura is the kind and gentle aunt.
- Aunt Elizabeth seems strict and suspicious. But she can be a helpful ally when things get tough.
