Emily of New Moon is a popular book by Lucy Maud Montgomery. It's the first in a series about an orphan girl named Emily who grows up on Prince Edward Island. Many people compare it to Montgomery's other famous series, Anne of Green Gables. The book was first published in 1923.

Emily Starr's Story

The Emily books tell the story of a young orphan girl named Emily Starr. After her father passes away, Emily goes to live with her relatives. The author, L. M. Montgomery, felt that Emily was a lot like herself. Some of the things that happen to Emily in the books actually happened to Montgomery.

Emily is described as having black hair and unique purple-violet eyes. She has pale skin and a special, charming smile.

Life at New Moon Farm

Emily is sent to live at New Moon Farm on Prince Edward Island. She lives with her aunts Elizabeth and Laura Murray, and her Cousin Jimmy. Emily quickly makes new friends. Her friends are Ilse Burnley, Teddy Kent, and Perry Miller. Perry is a boy who works on the farm. Aunt Elizabeth, however, doesn't think highly of Perry. This is because he comes from 'Stovepipe Town,' which is a poorer area.

Special Talents and Family Challenges

Each of Emily's friends has a special gift. Emily herself is a natural writer. Teddy is a very talented artist. Ilse is good at speaking clearly and expressively. Perry has the skills to become a great leader or politician.

However, each friend also faces challenges with their families. Emily finds it hard to get along with Aunt Elizabeth. Aunt Elizabeth doesn't understand why Emily needs to write so much. Ilse's father, Dr. Burnley, often ignores Ilse. Teddy's mother worries that her son will love his friends and art more than her. Because of this, she dislikes Emily, Teddy's drawings, and even his pets. Perry is not as wealthy as the others. His Aunt Tom once tried to make Emily promise to marry Perry when they grew up. She threatened not to pay for Perry's schooling if Emily didn't agree.

Other Interesting Characters

The book also features other memorable people. Dean "Jarback" Priest is a quiet and mysterious person. Mr. Carpenter is a strict old schoolteacher. He becomes Emily's mentor and gives honest feedback on her stories and poems. "Simple" Cousin Jimmy often recites poetry when he feels inspired. Aunt Laura is the kind and gentle aunt. Aunt Elizabeth is strict and often suspicious. Yet, she proves to be a surprising helper when Emily needs her most. Many readers consider this the most beloved book in the series.

The Emily Series

The Emily series includes three novels. They are Emily of New Moon (1923), Emily Climbs (1925), and Emily's Quest (1927). The books follow Emily as she goes through school. They show her journey to becoming a successful author. This journey is called the "Alpine Path," a phrase from an inspiring poem. The later books also describe Emily's friendships and adventures. Emily is a hero who loves nature and art. She is loyal to her friends and eager to learn. Most importantly, she is deeply dedicated to her writing.
