Emily Squires (born August 23, 1941 – died November 21, 2012) was an American television producer and director. She was best known for her amazing work on the popular children's show Sesame Street. She even won an Emmy Award for her contributions to the show.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Emily Squires went to Randolph Macon Women's College. She later received an award from them for being an outstanding former student. In 1962, she graduated from the University of North Carolina.

Later that year, she moved to New York City. She started working for CBS News. In 1967, when public television was just starting, she began working for the Public Broadcast Laboratory.

Working on Sesame Street

Two years later, in 1969, Emily Squires joined Sesame Street. She started as a production assistant during the show's very first year.

In 1982, Squires became part of the Sesame Street directing team. This team included famous directors like Jon Stone, Lisa Simon, and Ted May. For the next 25 years, she was nominated for 18 Emmy awards. She became known for her excellent skill in filming musical numbers.

Emily Squires was the first woman to direct Sesame Street. She also helped break other barriers in television. Sonia Manzano, who played Maria on the show, said that Emily wanted to work on Sesame Street because it was helping to change racial stereotypes in America.

Squires also helped produce a special show for "Sesame Street's" 25th anniversary. It was called "All-Star 25th Birthday: Stars and Stripes Forever!"

Other Projects and Achievements

Besides Sesame Street, Emily Squires also wrote for several daytime TV shows. These included Guiding Light, Secret Storm, Search for Tomorrow, and As the World Turns.

She also worked on TV series about different faiths and made documentaries. These documentaries were about important figures like the Dalai Lama and Frederick Franck. She also worked on a film about Hiroshima.

With her husband, Len Belzer, Emily Squires wrote a book. It was called Spiritual Places in New York City.

Awards and Recognition

Emily Squires won six Daytime Emmy Awards for directing Sesame Street. She also wrote and directed Between the Lions, another show on PBS.

She was nominated for three Writers Guild of America awards. These nominations were for her writing on Guiding Light and Search for Tomorrow. She won one of these awards in 1985.

In 1994, she received an Emmy Award for "Outstanding Children's Program." This was for her work on All-Star 25th Birthday: Stars and Streets Forever!.

She was nominated for fifteen Daytime Emmys in total. These nominations were for her writing and directing on shows like Guiding Light, As the World Turns, Sesame Street, and Between the Lions.

Emily Squires passed away on November 21, 2012, at the age of 71.
