Frederick Franck's Artworks
Frederick Franck's amazing sculptures can be found in many important art collections around the world. You can see his work in places like the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in the United States. His art is also displayed at the Fogg Art Museum and the Tokyo National Museum. One of his sculptures is even at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.
Pacem in Terris: A Place for Peace
Frederick Franck's biggest and most special creation was a sculpture garden and park. He built it next to his home in Warwick, New York. He named it Pacem in Terris, which means "Peace on Earth" in Latin.
Creating the Peace Garden
In 1959, Frederick Franck and his wife, Claske Berndes Franck, bought the land for Pacem in Terris. It was a six-acre property that used to have an old mill. Sadly, it had become a place where people dumped trash. They bought it for only $800. After a lot of hard work, they opened Pacem in Terris to the public in 1966.
Honoring Great Thinkers
Dr. Franck dedicated his peace garden to three important people. These were Dr. Albert Schweitzer, who he worked with in Africa. He also honored Pope John XXIII, a leader of the Catholic Church who wrote an important letter called Pacem in Terris. The third person he honored was D.T. Suzuki, a famous Buddhist teacher.
Exploring the Sculptures
Today, more than 70 sculptures fill the beautiful property of Pacem in Terris. Each sculpture helps to share a message of peace and understanding. A special non-profit group now takes care of the park, making sure it stays open for everyone to enjoy.
